Hokuto was given the "Seal of Blood" by the Mizukami family elders, which would compel her to erase all traces of her brother Kairi's existence. Fearing what she could become if the seal were to be released, Hokuto entrusts the continuation of the Mizukami-style to her sister Nanase, and goes on a journey to find her brother. This is the true form of the Mizukami-style ancient arts, which was founded from Ansatsuken.

Hokuto is an illegitimate child - her mother is from the main Mizukami family house, while her father is from one of the branch houses. To hide the truth about her parentage she was raised in the main house together with Kairi and Nanase.

However, the grudge that the branch houses harbored for their mistreatment passed on to Shirase as a suggestion. While on a boat during an oceanic voyage, under the influence of that suggestion, Shirase tossed Kairi off the boat into the ocean.
